On Wednesday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh emphasized the urgent need to transform the revival of polluted rivers into a public movement. He stated that it is time for society to take responsibility for the restoration of these vital waterways.
According to a statement released by the state government, during a review meeting of the Namami Gange and Rural Water Supply Department, the Chief Minister remarked, 'The development of human civilization has always occurred along riverbanks, yet we have subjected these life-giving rivers, which nurtured our culture, to unplanned urbanization and pollution.'
Adityanath reiterated the importance of viewing river restoration not merely as a project but as a social and cultural responsibility that requires collective awareness and action.
He pointed out that whether it is the Gomti in Lucknow, the Hindon in Ghaziabad, or the Varuna in Kashi, every river needs to be revitalized through a mission-oriented approach.
The Chief Minister instructed that the responsibilities for river restoration should be assigned to divisional commissioners, and this year's planting initiatives should focus specifically on riverbanks. He stressed that this effort should be based on public participation, not just administrative action.
Focusing on the Gomti River in the capital, he directed that a detailed project report for the 'Aviral-Nirmal Gomti' initiative be prepared within a month.
While reviewing the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission and the 'Har Ghar Nal' scheme, the Chief Minister noted that this is a commitment from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is being realized in Uttar Pradesh with full dedication.
As per the data presented in the meeting, regular drinking water supply is currently being ensured in 37,730 villages, with certification completed in 25,166 of those. Daily clean water supply is being provided to 3,016 villages in Bundelkhand and 2,051 villages in the Vindhya region.
